Girls on the Run 5K Promises Girl-Powered Fun

Local mascots line up for a 50-yard dash during the 2014 GOTR 5K. They face a “Mascot Dash” rematch at the May 30th 5K event.

What’s the best kind of 5K to enjoy with your closest lady friends? How about one that encourages tutus, finishes with a coronation, and lets you meet your favorite local mascots? On Saturday, May 30, the Girls on the Run 5K combines a 5K-distance run/walk with fun activities for all ages.

This girl-powered run/walk event is hosted by Girls on the Run of Northeast Indiana, one of more than 200 nationwide councils of Girls on the Run International. Now in its fourth season, the local chapter (formerly called Girls on the Run of Allen County) has grown to include ten teams that meet twice a week at various Northeast Indiana locations.

Despite its name, Girls on the Run is much more than a running club. At each meeting, third to fifth grade girls participate in interactive lessons on topics like resisting negative talk, practicing gratitude, and making healthy choices. Running and physical activities are used to add excitement and build confidence. The program also prepares each girl for a 5K race, which culminates each session.

The upcoming Girls on the Run 5K will celebrate the hard work of 100+ girls who are currently wrapping up the spring session. But the entire community is encouraged to join the sparkly, feather-boa-draped fun! The 5K is open to regional runners and walkers of all ages. Even better, every finisher receives a tiara!

Before and after the race, participants can decorate their hair and face with glitter and face paint, snap selfies at a photo booth, or create a poster to cheer on their favorite runner. A group of more than a dozen local sports, high school and promotional mascots will entertain the crowd with a friendly and competitive 50-yard dash.

Runners and walkers can sign up online or register the day of the race. Money raised from the 5K will help Girls on the Run of Northeast Indiana provide sliding-scale financial assistance and expand the program to even more regional girls.

Whether you are a grown-up girl, are the parent of a girl, or think girls are pretty great – the Girls on the Run 5K is the perfect place to celebrate the limitless potential of all ladies. Girls on the Run believes in showing girls that they CAN embrace who they are, define who they want to be, rise to any challenge, and change the world. At the Girls on the Run 5K, you CAN too!
