In its third year sustainfortwayne‘s Ride Green has a very different feel than other pub crawls around the city. Its focus on sustainability and community is unique. It’s a relaxed ride, with more emphasis on the journey from one stop to another. A detailed map and arrows along the route keep everyone together, which is half the fun.
Personally, I have participated in 2014 and 2015, and will again this year. When I first heard about it, the event sounded like the perfect way to spend an afternoon, and I didn’t want to miss out. Through Ride Green, I’ve met new friends, tried new local businesses, and become active in the cycling community. More importantly, I fell back in love with my bike. Now, I use my bike to commute to work, run errands, explore the greenway, meet friends for coffee, and get to meetings.
Andrew Hesterman is the Northern Indiana representative of The US Green Building Council – Indiana Chapter and the creator of Ride Green. He and his sustainfortwayne team are our local branch of this nationwide non-profit organization. Their mission is to “promote sustainable, prosperous and environmentally responsible design, construction and operations of Indiana buildings and communities.” The key word here is communities. Beyond using construction and design in a sustainable way, it is an effort to use building to create space for people to connect.
Andrew and I sat down to chat about the upcoming Ride Green event on Saturday, September 10. He explained the thought process behind using a pub crawl as a fundraiser and as a vehicle to get the message out. “Sustainability isn’t a sacrifice, and it can easily be integrated into daily life,” Andrew said. A pub crawl is fun. It allows people see how painless it is to ditch the car and still get around town. Community building is another unique aspect of the event. The camaraderie that goes along with having a shared experience is very important. Participants get to feel like they are part of something bigger – and greener. Make new friends at the top of a hill, or at a bar top.
Pub crawlers will meet at Headwaters Park west at noon and pick up their swag. Once everyone is ready, they head out to explore the city by bicycle and visit some great local businesses along the way.
