Healthy Grocery Stores in Fort Wayne

Trying to eat healthier? Here is an updated, comprehensive list of the healthy grocery stores in Fort Wayne and snippets of what makes each business unique. 1.       3 Rivers Co-Op Natural Grocery & Deli The 3 Rivers Co-Op Natural Grocery & Deli (otherwise known as “The Co-Op”) is located on Sherman Boulevard. The Co-op’s produce section is completely organic and features local produce when possible, as well as meat from local farms year-round. The grocery offers bulk foods, a wellness and supplements department, and an eat-in deli and café. Feel free to call ahead and place an order for pick-up. I recommend the Tofu Reuben! You can also become an owner and support local business and farming, in addition to scoring some great savings. 2.       Earth Fare Located on Dupont Road, Earth Fare is awesome because of its size! In summary, the store has options. If you’re looking for an obscure ingredient or the newest health food product, this is the place most likely to have it. Like the Co-Op, Earth Fare has a café and deli. A helpful tip to note—in the deli, the red bowls signify a dish is vegan. Even if you don’t live on the north end of town, this is a place worth visiting. If you haven’t already tried their “everything vegan” cookies, you’re missing out! 3.       Fresh Thyme Farmers Market Fresh Thyme is located on Coldwater Road off of Coliseum Boulevard and has a great selection of produce, meat, dairy, and frozen products. The store’s best feature is definitely its soup and salad bar. 4.       Ted’s Market Disclaimer—I have never been to Ted’s Market; however, after researching the store for this article, I’ve decided I need to check it out ASAP. Why? Not only can you buy wine by the glass to sip while shopping for regionally sourced food, but the market also features local goods such as Utopian Coffee and homemade bread. What a sensory experience! You can read more about Ted’s Market in an older blog post here, or visit the store’s website. 5.       Fresh Market Fresh Market is located in southwest Fort Wayne off of Jefferson Boulevard. The selection isn’t quite as large as some of the aforementioned stores, but it’s convenient if you live close by. It is also on the pricier end of the spectrum. Think high-end, gourmet goods and gifts. The bakery and fresh flowers are the best features of the store, but the sushi bar is also a plus. 6.       Health Food Shoppe Located on Anthony Boulevard, the Health Food Shoppe includes a fresh deli food bar, organic produce, and vitamins and supplements. The store is smaller; therefore, the selection is too, but this local place is...

The Sidecar: Fort Wayne’s Newest Outdoor Bar & Grill

Like dining al fresco? If so, check out The Sidecar, Fort Wayne’s newest patio bar and grill. Opened by Wine Down Tastings and Tapas, The Sidecar is a separate outdoor bar located on the restaurant’s patio.  The menu is laid-back featuring appetizers and highlighting items such as burgers, craft beer, and wine to name a few. So, with that in mind, I’d like to share more about my own experience at The Sidecar.   I dined at the restaurant as a date night, and my partner and I were greeted, and led to a street-side table where we browsed the menu. The views of downtown and Parkview Field are certainly perks of the location! Beginning with the food, we decided on the vegetarian burger with avocado, and a Korean short rib dish with rice. We also enjoyed some Three Floyd’s Alpha King that was on draft. In regards to the service, our server was knowledgeable and patient. She answered our many questions, and was prompt and personable. Overall, the meal was fabulous. While eating, we took in the scenery and feel of the bar. As mentioned above, the views of downtown were beautiful and the atmosphere was very nice. I recommend dining in the evening because the restaurant has fire pits and pretty outdoor lighting which adds to the experience. The décor is modern, and the place feels casual and comfortable—like a friend’s backyard.   Overall, the restaurant is in a great location, the food is delicious, and the service is top-notch. It is perfect for so many occasions including a date night. I’m already looking forward to watching the Tin Caps fireworks while sipping a cocktail slushy next summer! Definitely give this place a try while it’s still in...

Lazer X Is Back!

Lazer X Is Back!

Have you heard? Lazer X is back. Yes, that’s right! For those of you who aren’t familiar, Lazer X was, until recently, closed because of a fire. However, the business has since reopened in the same location, and several improvements have been made. So, since Lazer X is back, let me suggest a few ways you can plan a day around your next intergalactic adventure.   First off, the day my friends and I went we planned on playing around 7PM. Though, keep in mind, depending on the day you go, you’ll want to check what hours are most busy, and go then because the larger the group the more fun you’re going to have! Additionally, Lazer X has daily specials posted on their website for you to check out, and—last side-note—here is a coupon: two games for $10. Moving on, if you’re going to spend an afternoon or evening running around, you’ll need to fuel up prior. Where should you go for a late lunch? We ate at the food court in Glenbrook Square Mall, and then window-shopped and sipped Starbucks. Cebolla’s, which is within walking distance of Lazer X, is another convenient option. Overall, just pick something everyone can agree on! Next, we spent some time playing games in the upgraded arcade at Lazer X while waiting for some stragglers of our group to show. Once everyone was present, we each bought two games. A single game is about 15 minutes long, and SO much fun! Finally, after we finished our second game, my friends and I went to 816 Pint & Slice for dinner and drinks. Although, if you’re not yet hungry you could also go to the discount movie theater in Coventry, Apollo Coventry 13. It’s nice to relax and put your feet up after two games of running around. All in all, with the weather getting colder, this is a great indoor activity most people can enjoy and participate in. So I encourage you to get a group of friends together and...

Mitchell’s Sports & Neighborhood Grill: Your New Game Day Hotspot

Looking for a new place to watch the game? Look no further. Mitchell’s Sports and Neighborhood Grill is like Buffalo Wild Wings on steroids. From the food, to the arcade and HD flat screens, to the craft beer, there are numerous reasons to check this local place out. With the above in mind, let me give you some context. The restaurant was originally opened in 2010. However, a fire damaged the building, and the restaurant consequently closed. Now, Mitchell’s has been recreated at a new location and is better than ever. So, allow me to sum things up for you. Here are the top three reasons you should try Mitchell’s Sports and Neighborhood Grill:   1.       The Food Since their rebuilding, Mitchell’s has added to and improved their menu. They even offer various vegan items so this would be a great place for veg-lovers and meat-eaters to come together! 2.       The Beer Choose from one of Mitchell’s 50 ice-cold bottled brews or from one of their 10 rotating craft beer taps. Mitchell’s also offers their signature lager, a 16 oz. pint for two dollars. Additionally, the bartenders are fantastic at making several refreshing mixed drinks, including a Moscow Mule. I recommend the latter! 3.       The Entertainment Mitchell’s has an arcade, pool, darts, 45 HD flat screens, and a 20 foot jumbo screen for viewing games. It is important to note, in addition to having two fully-stocked bars, Mitchell’s is family-friendly with something to keep kids and adults entertained. So, where is this place? It is located at the intersection of West Jefferson Boulevard and Getz Road. Just a fair warning, it is a little hidden by some construction. Though, it shouldn’t be hard to find if you use your maps app. Overall, from the food, to the beer, to the entertainment, Mitchell’s has it all. Come check them out next time you’re looking for a place to watch the...

Summer Nights at the Embassy

Summer Nights at the Embassy

Want to spice up your summer nights? I’ve got just the recommendation. On the next free Wednesday you have, try Summer Nights at the Embassy. From the food and drinks, to the entertainment, to the spectacular views of downtown, it’s a great time. What does the event entail? Well, let me tell you about my experience. Summer Nights at the Embassy consists of local food, entertainment, and a cash bar, and takes place in the Embassy Theatre’s newly renovated ballroom, as well as on the Parkview rooftop patio each Wednesday until September 7th. Tickets are five dollars, and it is a casual “come and go as you wish” type of event. Doors open at 5PM and close at 9PM. On the night I attended, Tacos Bravas  served delicious food, and dAnce Kontemporary was the featured entertainment. Every fifteen minutes, a group of dancers performed beautifully engaging and captivating routines while people, sitting at round tables, casually chatted, sipped on their mixed drinks, and ate mini tortas. Overall, as mentioned above, the night was delightful. Continuing on, the cash bar is stocked with local beer and spirits from Three Rivers Distilling Company. So, the entire event is made up of local businesses and talent. The food rotates each week between Tacos Bravas, Club Soda, and Salud! Tapas & Tequila. The schedule for the event with the respective food and entertainment can be found on the Embassy Theatre’s website or Facebook page. If you’re looking for fun, different activities to do this summer, I definitely encourage you to visit the Embassy Theatre. The ballroom and rooftop are beautiful, the staff is kind and informative in regards to the building, and the food and drinks are satisfying. Plus, the local entertainment captivates audiences each week, with something for everyone’s taste. Come see the newly renovated Embassy ballroom, support local talent and businesses, and enjoy...
