For the Budget-Minded: Easy Savings at the Store

When you’re on a budget (or need to start one), pennies count. I’ll be the first to admit – I hate being on a budget.  But I do enjoy saving money. Some people look at clipping coupons like it’s not a big deal, but the truth is that many of those coupons can save you quite a bit of money in the long run. And a step beyond clipping coupons is the art of price-matching. Price match (noun): “A company may offer a price-matching guarantee to its customers based on the advertised price for a specific product. If a rival offers the same product for a lower advertised price, the company will either match the lower price or refund the difference if the customer has already purchased the product from it.” Before I explain any further, I need to address a couple things: Meijer does not acknowledge price-matches on grocery items, only on general merchandise I have found that price-matching works best at Walmart Walmart acknowledges most price-matches, but lower prices offered due to “reward bucks” that accumulate from CVS or Walgreens are not fair game. My oldest daughter and I like make a game out of this. We make our grocery list every Sunday morning, look at all the ads and coupons from Sunday’s paper, and then clip the coupons and circle the price matches accordingly. When you are ready to check out at the register, make sure to let the cashier know ahead of time that you have price-matches and/or coupons. Also, be sure to separate your price-matched items from the rest of your purchase. This helps you stay organized because it takes a little time to show the cashier every price-matched item. Believe it or not, I have saved upwards of $150 at the store on using a combination of coupons and price-matches.  Generally, I only spend about half of what my total purchase actually costs. If you are unsure of whether or not your favorite local grocer offers a price-match guarantee, just give them a...
