The dreaded job search. If you’re anything like me, your resume may not do you as much justice as it should. I have no problem getting an interview, but it’s almost never been from simply submitting my resume and has almost always been from selling myself in person. This is one reason why I love job fairs. These meccas for job-seekers are the best way to get your foot in the door with a company and it gives the company rep a chance to interact with you face-to-face. And let’s be honest – a lot of the exhibitors hand out free stuff. Free is definitely in my budget. We’re going to make this short and sweet: for your convenience I have taken it upon myself to dig up the info on a few upcoming local job fairs happening within the next few weeks. Women’s Empowerment Job Series Event

I haven’t come across too many people who actually enjoy the process of job-hunting. I, for one, have been feverishly scouring the internet, social media sites, newspaper ads, job fairs, etc. for the past 6 months …you name it, I’ve checked it. Out of the hundreds of resumes and cover letters that I have sent out, I may have received just a handful of emails or phone calls stating that I was worthy of an interview. The only problem is that none of the positions that I interviewed for were in fields that I really wanted. Why is that? Why are companies not calling me regarding the careers that I actually want? Perhaps it’s all in the wording… A couple months ago I received an email with a flier that shouted “Women’s Empowerment Job Series” in big, bold letters. Besides being free to attend, the first thing that caught my eye was the flier’s promise of free childcare for attendees during the event. There were so many times in the past when I couldn’t attend a job fair or interview because I couldn’t find childcare, but this event promised to alleviate that burden. It also promoted free breakfast and even…*gasp…free Starbucks coffee! I had to find out more, so I did as the flier said to do and reached out to Kathryn Franklin. As I found out, Kathryn is a project director for Enactus of IPFW. Enactus is an IPFW group comprised of “leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.”  When I asked Kathryn why Enactus chose to do such an event, she said very simply, “It really is to empower women. We are just giving [women] an event where they can polish their resume building and interview skills. We want to help women be fully equipped to get the most out of the workforce.” In speaking with Kathryn, she also stated that several Fort Wayne professionals will be on hand to provide insight and answer questions – even a life coach will be there! And, of course, I must mention that door prizes will be given away. Who doesn’t love a free gift card?! This event is happening this Saturday, February 21st from 10am – 12pm at the Honors Center of IPFW (located in Helmke Library Room 221). Those who wish to attend must RSVP by the end of day today, February 18th, to Kathryn Franklin at (260) 515-9703. I think I’ll go ahead and RSVP myself while I’m at it. Who knows…maybe someone can provide some insight on why my job search isn’t...
