Let’s Give Allen County, an Interview with Heidi Colone

Living Fort Wayne recently talked with Heidi Colone – Chair for YLNI Let’s Give Allen County and committee member for Get on Board – about the upcoming charity-focused event, Let’s Give Allen County. Q: How did the idea of Let’s Give Allen County come about? A: The Community Foundation’s Board President went to an event held by the Knight Foundation where they had showcased “Match Day.” The Knight Foundation came to the Greater Fort Wayne Community Foundation and provided them financial support to bring a similar event to Fort Wayne. This coincides with the celebration of 100 years of Community Foundations across the country.  CFGFW approached YLNI in order to assist with promoting philanthropy in young adults (age 40 and younger.)   Q: What non-profits are involved in this event, and how were they selected? A: When the Community Foundation came to YLNI, YLNI surveyed their membership on issues that were most important to them. As a result of the survey, three areas surfaced : Arts & Culture, Basic Need, and Youth Development.  A select group from YLNI Leadership collaborated with the Community Foundation to select five non-profits who maintain their endowments at the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. Q: Could you give us a basic breakdown of the goals and process of this campaign? A: The campaign starts on May 6th at 6:30 AM and runs until 6:30 PM – twelve hours to raise the most money possible for five amazing organizations through the power of social media. Cash donations are also accepted during this time at the Community Foundation (555 E. Wayne Street.) The goals are endless. The first $5,000 per organization will be matched dollar for dollar. Any amounts received in excess of $5,000 per charity will be added to the endowment fund of that charity and will be matched 20 percent by the Community Foundation, up to $100,000. Q: How does the public take part? A: Using the connective power of social media, all of Allen County is invited to take part in this extraordinary event online at www.letsgiveallencounty.org, via Twitter (@cfgfw) and #letsgiveallencounty, and on Facebook (facebook.com/CFGFW). In addition, on the day of the online event, at the Community Foundation there will be coffee and donuts from 6:30 AM until 9:00 AM. We will be serving hot dogs and soda from WLDE’s Weenie Wagon from 11 AM – 2 PM, and pizza from Pizza Hut will be served from 4 PM – 6 PM. Q: What happens after it’s over?  How will this campaign benefit YLNI? A: If each of the five organizations raises $5,000, an anonymous donor will match that $5,000 and...
