A Better Fort presents BAALS Music Festival

Do you have a love for electronic dance music (EDM) and other great genres of music? Head down to the BAALS Music Festival for a full day of music and activities at Headwaters Park, 330 S. Clinton St., in downtown Fort Wayne on Saturday, August 1 from 8 am to 1 am. Founded in 2012 by Alex Smith and Shane Araujo as #House4aHouse, the event originally started as a downtown block party hosted by the downtown advocacy group A Better Fort with proceeds going to the Mad Anthony Children’s Hope House. Playing off the national notoriety of a recent campaign to name Fort Wayne’s new government center after Fort Wayne’s longest serving mayor (Harry W. Baals), the event has changed its name to the BAALS Music Festival to take “recently publicized stereotypes and rhetoric, [poke] fun at them and [embrace] them as something of the past.” If you stop by and take a look this year, you will be amazed by just how large the festival has gotten. With continued support from A Better Fort and Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) as a title sponsor, BAALS is continuing to expand into one of largest EDM festivals in the Midwest. “We are transitioning to a multi-genre sort of festival,” said executive director Daniel Butler. “We have rock bands. We have jam bands. We have hip hop. We have EDM, obviously – that’s our main focus.” BAALS is getting the word out with close to one hundred volunteers on its street team from across the region promoting the festival on social media, with fliers, and by word of mouth. Last year’s event had attendees from around the Midwest. “Our goal is to hit 10,000 [attendees] in one day,” said Butler. “This year is an all day festival [with] multiple stages and a lot more space.” Just how crazy will the event be? Don’t worry! At the event you will find a full slate of opportunities for people of all ages. There will be a zip line, multiple food vendors, a food truck alley, a beer garden, an oxygen bar, opportunities to participate in a lip syncing video, and more family-oriented music earlier in the day. Children are welcome all day. And best of all, $5,000 in proceeds will be donated again to charity this year. With plans for future expansion of the event, it will be exciting to see what BAALS can do for economic growth in Fort Wayne.
