Get Organized this January with Goodwill Industries

Article submitted by Laurie Walls of Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana, Inc. After the hectic holiday season, an organized home in the middle of winter might seem as distant of an idea as flip flops, tank tops and sunny skies.  With icy roads and frigid temperatures outside, enjoy the warmth inside by taking advantage of Get Organized Month throughout January.  Here are 10 helpful tips on how to get started: 1) Set a date and stick to it.  Make sure to clear your schedule for that particular day to avoid procrastination.  Start with simple organizational tasks such as buying trash bags, collecting boxes and crates, or planning a trip to the local donation center. 2) Delegate.  Make it a family affair by assigning tasks.  Let the kids organize the game closet and playroom while the adults move heavy boxes and organize the garage. 3) Be realistic.  Create a to-do list that is simplistic and practical.  List tasks in terms of priority from highest to lowest, then enjoy the satisfaction of completing a task and crossing it off the list. 4) Take it one step at a time.  Don’t overwhelm yourself or your family by taking on too much at once. It will help you stay motivated if you tackle one room or area of your home before eventually moving on to another. 5) Give each item a “home.”  One of the biggest reasons that items unnecessarily accumulate is due to inefficiency.  Keep items in the same room where they are used and be sure to put them away after use.  If it is a heavily used item, store it in a place with easy access. 6) Donate the items you no longer need.  Get rid of clothing, household items and gently used items you no longer use and donate them to local organizations like Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana.
