LFW Weekend Fun File

It’s Memorial Day weekend! If you’re not going to the Indy 500 or the lake, check out the awesome things happening in our city! This is by no means an exhaustive list, and if you don’t quite see what you’re looking for, check out our events calendar. If you’d like to see your event featured in the Weekend Fun File, or added to our events calendar, let us know! Email us at info@livingfortwayne.com or you can go ahead and submit your event to our calendar! 1. Grand Opening Chapman’s Brewing tap room at Fortezza Coffee Shop Thursday, May 26 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Per the Facebook Page: “Fortezza Coffee Shop owners Sean and Melody Wang have partnered with Chapman’s Brewing Founder, Scott Fergusson to open a tap room in downtown Fort Wayne. Fortezza / Chapmans Tap Room, at 819 South Calhoun Street in Fort Wayne. They will open with 10 taps of Chapman’s beer, and with their Indiana small brewer’s permit they can offer growlers fills, pints, kegs, and cold carryout.” — This will be awesome. Be some of the first to check it out! 2. 2016 Heritage Jazz Tour Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. A great concert at the Philmore on Broadway. Tickets are $30 in advance. 3. REO Speedwagon Concert Friday, May 27, 2016 at 8 p.m. As part of the Foellinger Theater Concert Series, REO Speedwagon is coming! Tickets are from $49-$99 and the show should be great! 4. YLNI Farmer’s Market Saturday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Formerly known as Barr Street Market, it’s the same summer market we all know and love. It opened last week and is open through the summer. Come check it out! There’s something for everyone! 5. Free Showing of the Guardians of the Galaxy at Sweets So Geek Saturday, May 28 at 8 p.m.     The movie begins a few minutes after sundown. These are always fun! There will be games and activities, and I heard maybe even a dance off. 6. Botanical Conservatory Spring Discount Day/Iris Flower Show Sunday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.   Tickets for adults are $3 and for children $2. The Botanical Conservatory is so fun, and it might be raining this weekend, so this is definitely something wonderful to do, especially with the kiddos! 7. Bees, Wasps, and Hornets at Fox Island Sunday, May 29 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. My daughter is terrified of bees. I love bees. They’re important (especially honey bees). You can see the indoor beehive and maybe even the queen bee if you can find her (no, not Beyonce). 8. Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony Monday, May 30 at 11...

Live Music Venue Series – Great Music for Summer 2015

It’s hard to know for sure in Indiana, but it looks like winter has finally decided to leave us. You may now peel off your many protective layers, go outside, and actually enjoy it. There’s no shortage of things to do out there. Take a hike, cook over an open fire, go swimming, chew bubblegum, see a show, but do it all now while you can because winter will be back sooner than most of us would like. For those particularly interested in the last item listed, here are three great venues hosting live music all summer long. Foellinger Outdoor Theatre: Maintained by the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation department, the Foellinger theater is a large open air theater that provides entertainment to the community all summer long. Hosting well known national acts as well as free shows from organizations like the Fort Wayne Community Band and the Fort Wayne Children’s choir, there’s plenty to see on their stage. Some notable acts performing there this year include the Doobie Brothers and the Steve Miller Band. Events are held rain or shine, but the theater is covered. The box office is open from 6-10pm on show days and tickets can be purchased in person or on the phone. Free shows are open seating. The venue is smoke free and outside food and beverage is not permitted. To find out more and see an event schedule, head on over to their website here. Foellinger Theatre 3411 Sherman Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN 46808 (260) 427-6715 Rock the Plaza 2015: Outside on the Main Library’s plaza, near where Wayne and Webster St meet, Rock the Plaza features great local musicians on a weekly basis. With lineups that never disappoint, you will see some of the best all-ages shows here. Shows are free and start at 6pm every Saturday from May 30th through August 29th. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase from 816 Pint and Slice on site. Smoking is prohibited inside the plaza. A schedule and lineup of bands for the event can be found here. ACPL Main Branch 900 Library Plaza, Fort Wayne, IN 46802 Botanical Roots: Hosted in the terrace garden of the Botanical Conservatory downtown, Botanical Roots is a six week long summer concert series featuring zydeco, blues, reggae, and other roots genre acts. An oasis in the heart of downtown, the conservatory’s garden makes for a beautiful spot to listen to live music. Food and drink is available from Mad Anthony Brewing, but no carry-in is allowed. Shows are Fridays July 31st – September 4th and held rain or shine. Local bands open at 8:30pm with headliners taking the stage around...
