Independence Day in the Fort

Independence Day in the Fort

On July 4th in 1843, Fort Wayne held the largest Independence Day celebration ever with the Grand Opening Celebration of the Wabash Erie Canal.  It took place on ‘The Summit’ (Fort Wayne’s nickname for the highest point along the canal).  All were invited, including leaders of our nation.  Boats lined the canal.  The parade was a mile long and took place on the Public Square where soldiers from the war of 1812 displayed our nations colors and marched to the Thomas Swinney Farm.  Crowds gathered at the Swinney Farm while bands played and a potential presidential candidate gave a speech followed by the firing of a cannon. Today in Fort Wayne, locals and visitors alike will be having fun celebrating the 4th of July by getting out the picnic table, the checkered table cloths, the red, white and blue center pieces, and firing up the grill!  We will enjoy the traditional 4th of July fare consisting of hot dogs and hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans and cool lemonade – all while anxiously awaiting the magnificent fireworks display. This year, the fireworks display, as many of you already know, will be downtown at One Summit Square at 10pm or when the Tincaps game is over.  Before the fireworks show and after the picnic, take a tour of downtown and see all the changes taking place.  Take a trolly ride, go on the Pedal City tour or enjoy the summer weather by taking a walk or biking and exploring all the new Sculptures with a Purpose. Whatever you end up doing, have fun and stay safe!  Happy 4th of July!
