All We Want For Christmas is Fort Wayne

The holidays are upon us and if you are anything like me, you are probably scrambling to get that perfect gift for a special someone. Here at Living Fort Wayne, we love to shop local and promote small businesses right here in the heart of downtown. To continue on with this tradition, we asked our staff what they wanted the most for Christmas. So sit back, relax, read our 2015 edition of All We Want For Christmas is Fort Wayne, and hope you’re not on Santa’s “Naughty” list.   Leslie Snare Well, I’m hoping Santa (or someone equally as cool) gets me a Brewerker membership from Summit City Brewerks. I’d definitely be better equipped to deal with the holiday shopping crowds! Plus, membership includes a t-shirt so that’s an extra special bonus! This membership also includes a SCB logo beer glass, birthday fill, membership card & sticker, and even special invitation-only events. Becca Bell I want a Patagonia pullover from Fort Wayne Outfitters and a year’s supply of weekly bottles from Juice Jar. I’d love for Santa to add to my collection of Susan and Steven Shaikh’s gemstone rings, which are sold at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art Paradigm Gallery. Also, mugs from Laura Brandenburg’s Stonewares. Tim Zink I know this is an old standby favorite in Fort Wayne. Since I thoroughly enjoy cookies, I wouldn’t mind having a box of cookies from the Cookie Cottage to replace every meal for a couple days (or to share…I guess). Jasmine Bejar I’ll add anything from Hedgehog Press. I love the unique and Fort Wayne-centric prints and art! I’m specifically itching for some of her wood cut coasters. Some Hedgehog Press products are also sold at Valontine Vintage inside the City Exchange Shops. Jade Kelsey If Santa could bring me a shiny new bike from Human Motor Works, I promise to be good all year! Human Motor Works also sells great running gear, bike accessories, and everything you’ll need for your next triathlon! Lynn Altevogt I just want absolutely everything from Fancy & Staple! But since I don’t expect anyone to spend quite that much money on me, a gift card would do just fine. Honestly, browsing around the shop is half the fun. I usually have to make two or three rounds to look at everything. Here are a few things on my wish list from there:     Travis Bartlett  I would love a bottle of beard oil from Valontine Vintage and some gourmet popcorn from Poptique, both located inside The City Exchange Shops. Some goodies from the Vanilla Bean to satisfy my relentless sweet tooth and I would also...

Gift This: Homemade Spa-in-a-Gift Basket

Have you started your holiday shopping yet? If you’ve already ventured out, you have likely noticed the same old song and dance of Christmas gifts. There’s the meat and cheese gift box, the hat/scarf/glove set, and the dreaded kitchen accessories. If you’d like to give that special someone a unique and thoughtful gift that will be appreciated and used, we’ve got you covered! Gift baskets are always a huge hit, there’s no denying that, but a basket that has been hand-picked and filled with items we can actually use? Yes please! Here’s how to create an amazing gift basket made personal for someone you love. Every successful gift basket needs a theme, and for Christmas you want to be on point. We love the idea of a Spa-in-a-Basket concept because, well who doesn’t love spa products? This is sure to please a special lady in your life. Guys, you may earn some bonus points with this one. The best part, it’s super simple to pull together. For starters, you’ll need a basket. Currently, there are countless holiday baskets lining store shelves. Take your pick, but make sure it’s big enough to hold all of the amazing spa items that will rest in it. To cushion the bottom, either fill it with some tissue paper or shredded decorative paper. Now for some luxurious ingredients: We love the idea of something homemade. Since many of us are suffering from winter skin, a freshly made hydrating facial scrub is perfect. You’ll need a container for the scrub like the small jelly jars we found at Target. Fill the jar with this homemade scrub: Juice from 1 lemon, 1 Tablespoon honey, and 2 Tablespoons of sugar. We bought our organic ingredients from Earth Fare. Tie pretty Christmas ribbon around the jar. Grab a decorative recipe card to include the scrub recipe and these instructions: apply a layer of olive oil to the skin then press the scrub into the oil. Gently massage, leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse. Safe for the face and body! Follow with a beauty oil and let the magic happen as you sleep. We included a bottle of Aveda’s Beautifying Oil along with a gift card to In Touch SalonSpa to tie in our spa idea with the scrub. Another great item to include in your spa gift basket is a sampler of high quality skin care products such as the Dr. Hauschka Revitalizing Face Care Kit we found at Earth Fare. No spa basket is complete without tea! A great option for this theme is Yogi Skin DeTox tea, also found at Earth Fare. Another great item to include is...

All We Want for Christmas is Fort Wayne

It’s that season again, stockings hung, chestnuts roasting, twinkling lights, and sugar cookies. You know, all the things that make the holidays warm and cheery. Last year we asked some of our volunteers what they wanted for the holidays and we posted it in our first All We Want for Christmas is Fort Wayne. This year we are continuing the tradition with a 2014 edition of a #ShopLocal holiday gift list. Read on to see what local things our volunteers hope to see under their trees. Lynn Altevogt DeBrand Fine Chocolates – DeBrand is Fort Wayne’s favorite chocolate, and I’m not sure there is much they offer that I haven’t tried. I’ve been really craving the Gourmet S’mores Kit, the perfect snack for cold winter nights. Summit City Bikes and Fitness – Have you guys heard of “fat” bikes? They have wider tires, perfect for riding in snow, so that you can bike all year round! They have a ton over at Summit City Bikes that I think I could make room at my place for. Cardinal Tattoo – I am in need of some more ink and I am in love with the work done by the boys at Cardinal Tattoo. They did all our 3RRC tattoos last spring and I’ve been itching to go back ever since. A $50 gift card should be a good start. You know what, let’s just make it an even $100. Affine Food Truck – I downloaded the Dash n’ Dine app on my phone solely so I can figure out if Affine is near me when hunger strikes. It has come in quite handy. But you know what would be even more handy? — a gift card to Affine. Wendy Englehart Smells from Old Fort Soap Company – Any scent will do. Specifically, Coconut and Shea, Carrot and Calendula or Lavendar and Lemongrass. Oh, and a bath bomb so I can relax in some bubbly effervescence. Mahnin – Green Curry please, large size with seafood. Make sure they go heavy on the Thai Basil and Asian eggplant. Ask them to keep it mild, because even the heat from that will knock my socks off. Bottle of Barreja from Two-EE’s – This is a self-explanatory, can’t-go-wrong gift. Tickets to C2G’s Janis Joplin Tribute on Saturday, January 17th – If you aren’t familiar with Come To Go, or the C2G Music Hall, this is an awesome venue for both worship and outstanding acoustics. I’m pretty sure musicians just sound better here. Emily Farmer 1-Month Membership to Studio Seva – I was recently notified that they have a yoga class with a twist…SevAerial Yoga! That’s right. Everyone...
