Middle Waves Music Festival

If you love the experience of going to a concert like Tera and I do, you know very well you have to do a little bit of traveling whether it’s to Indianapolis or even Chicago to see a popular show. This year, you don’t have to pack your bags. On September 16th and 17th Fort Wayne welcomes Middle Waves Music Festival. The first of its kind here in the Fort, Middle Waves is set to bring a wide variety of indie, hip hop and rock music. We had the opportunity to speak with owner of One Lucky Guitar and Chair Member Matt Kelley about Middle Waves. Angie and Tera: I’m sure people want to know where the idea came from for a music festival to reside in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Matt Kelley: The idea came from many different places. Greater Fort Wayne Inc. travels to another city every year to learn best practices about what makes that city great. In 2014, they traveled to Des Moines, Iowa where they host their own music festival. Fort Wayne has had a live music scene that feels like it’s been on the rise for about a decade. We have really lacked a destination festival like a Pitchfork or a smaller Lollapalooza, and these things exist all over the country and people from Fort Wayne travel to them. The Des Moines festival has been the role model for Middle Waves. It took about a year and a half of meetings to get this started. Angie and Tera: How do you go about picking bands to come here to Fort Wayne? Matt Kelley: We want to be very eclectic when choosing artists to participate in the music festival. We felt that the first set of bands that are scheduled to perform really set the mark where it established that it’s okay to have hip hop, and rock and a new up-and-coming band as well as an established band to perform at a festival, mixed in with great local acts as well. We are seeking for Middle Waves to push Fort Wayne out of its comfort zone a little bit. We want this to be a very inclusive and diverse festival. We want people to experience something new, in which you will probably be exposed to music you have never heard before. Angie and Tera: How many people do you expect? Matt Kelley: We expect to have around 8,000 to 10,000 attendees, which not only include individuals from Fort Wayne but also the surrounding areas such as Indianapolis, South Bend, Ohio and areas within a two hour driving distance. The setup is sure to be amazing. With one paid stage featuring...
