Winter Market Vendor Series: Lyon Jewelry Is All That

It’s Saturday morning at the YLNI Winter Market. Everyone is humming about and drones of people are pouring in as soon as the doors open at 10am. Then there’s Becky Lyon, a bit disheveled, and eagerly digging out boxes and boxes of her handmade treasures. I can’t help but watch her. Every weekend there’s something new and, without a doubt, I add an item to my wish list. She looks at me and holds out her arm, “You know this is toothpaste on my sleeve, right?” I laugh…I like her, and despite a late start to her busy day, she’s in great spirits and excited to talk about what she does best. Make jewelry. And so I bring you the second edition of our Winter Market Vendor Series. A cute, cool, quirky and certainly talented woman, Becky Lyon of Lyon Jewelry. The first time I ran into Becky’s booth, it was before Christmas at another artisan market. I was immediately drawn to the gorgeous beaded wrap bracelets sitting at her table. She could tell, obviously. “Put it on,” she said. “Don’t be afraid, just do it! Once you wear it you’ll know if you like it.” (Later I would find out that this is one of Becky’s favorite parts of working the market. Helping people find jewelry they love and watching their eyes light up when they see something they’ve never seen before.) So, I put it on. The doors blew open and beams of light flooded in and angels started singing. I LOVED it. It felt solid and just heavy enough when I laid it on my wrist. The leather binding the beads was soft and pliable. And those beautiful round turquoise beads…they were cool and smooth and made this delicate clicking noise as I wrapped them around my arm. I must remain calm… You should know, I don’t make rash decisions when it comes to purchasing accessories.  I like to think it over. You know, be responsible about it. The truth is, I had already spent all of my money on Christmas gifts for everyone else. So I had to pass this time. And in my opinion, the practice of “passing this time” is often the true test of just how much you really want something. Do you think about it? Do you imagine yourself wearing it? Do you curse yourself in the morning when you put on an outfit that will match it perfectly? That’s how you know you really want something. And that’s exactly what I did. Three long weeks passed since my first visit to the Lyon Jewelry booth. I finally returned, and after tacking about five more pieces on to my wish list, I made...
