Show & Tell: Life House (The Rescue Mission)

“Hey sweetie! How was school today?” These are the exact first words that come out of my mouth every day when I pick Kennedy up from school. Without fail, she gives me a shrug, “Eh. So, what’s for dinner?” And these are the exact words that come from Kennedy’s mouth every day, like tradition. Although most parents can accurately predict the response that we will be greeted with, we continue to insist on asking our kids the same questions – day after day – as if one day their answer might change. (I believe that’s called insanity.) “Pizza. I Didn’t prepare anything, and Daddy and I don’t have time to cook tonight.” “Ugh! I don’t want pizza. Can we go to McDonald’s?!” she says with a whine. On this particular day I felt a rush of irritation come over me. Was she freaking serious? Actually, I knew she was. When I approached Kennedy with my decision for us to volunteer at The Rescue Mission, I was very surprised at her reaction – she couldn’t wait to volunteer! In fact, it peaked her interest so much that she could not stop asking me questions about what volunteering is like, what the people are like, what we would be doing, and so on. The more she asked, the more intrigued I became with some of her questions as well. Hence, I reached out to Willie Smith, Volunteer Coordinator with The Rescue Mission. I have heard that The Rescue Mission provides several services to the community, but I am not too familiar with all of them. Could you share with us the different programs that The Rescue Mission offers? Absolutely! We have Life House, our short-term housing program for men which provides immediate relief  from hunger and homelessness. This is also where...
