15 Ideas for Winter Family Fun in the Fort

It’s that time of year: the holidays are over, but winter is still upon us, spring and summer are too distant to get excited about just yet. Boredom is constantly lurking, and lazy nights it seems like the only option every weekend.  If only there were another way… Fort Wayne to the rescue!  Despite this annual lull and chilly weather, our city is never short on activities, happenings, and events.  We’ve done the research: check out our top 15 ideas for the whole family on staying busy and entertained this winter.   1. Fort Wayne Mad Ants 10th Anniversary Season

Can you believe the Mad Ants have been in Fort Wayne for ten years already? John Zeglis and Jeff Potter started the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2007 and sold it to the Indiana Pacers this year as part of the NBA Development League in affiliation with the Indiana Pacers. It is now run by Timothy Bawman, President of the Mad Ants franchise. I had the pleasure of speaking with Bawman about the Mad Ants 10th season anniversary. This season, we are going to see more of the influence of the Indiana Pacers over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants as well as plenty of “Ant”-ertainment for everyone to enjoy! The name “Mad Ants” came from “Mad” Anthony Wayne, the namesake of Fort Wayne. The Fort Wayne Mad Ants play in the NBA Development League (D-League), which is the highest level of minor league basketball in the United States. Players can be playing for the Indiana Pacers one day and the next be playing for the Mad Ants. One of these players is Rakeem Christmas. Some alumni of the Mad Ants are Ron Howard (Mr. Mad Ant), CJ Fair of the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers, and Dahntay Jones of the Los Angeles Clippers. Some players to look out for this season are two former Indiana University basketball players: Christian Watford, who scored the winning shot against the University of Kentucky in 2011 and Nick Zeisloft. Allen County War Memorial Coliseum houses the the Fort Wayne Mad Ants and has been upgraded for the upcoming season. The franchise has changed the experience of going to a game at the Coliseum with more intimate seating arrangements in the arena and Kid Zone. They have also added a Drum Line and plenty of giveaways! What is “Ant”-ertainment? Face-painting, games, and half-time shows are just a few of what the Mad Ants has in store for this season for the whole family. For someone who’s never been to a game, be aware that there will be plenty of Mad Ants swag such as bobbleheads, replica championship rings, hats, and t-shirts! “You don’t have to be a basketball fan to enjoy the Mad Ants,” Bawman said. “We have plenty of Ant-ertainment for the whole family.” The Mad Ants has been in Fort Wayne since 2007 and have been very active in the community. Being a title sponsor of the Urban League, they have also sponsored Empowering Men and Brilliant Girls of the Boys and Girls club and several reading initiatives within the area and they don’t plan on stopping. “There will be plenty of that [community involvement] as time goes on,” Bawman said. The Mad Ants feel...

Throw a Pi(e) in the Face of Cancer!

Locally owned Sweets So Geek and Young Professionals for the American Cancer Society (YPACS) will be hosting a charity art show to help fund cancer research and the Live Bold fund created by the Fort Wayne Small Business Owner’s Association in honor of local entrepreneur Lindsey Hively and other business owners who have left us too soon. On March 12th, the Saturday before Pi Day, Sweets So Geek will be displaying and auctioning pie pans that were passed out to area artists (including the Komets and the Mad Ants) with the instructions to “make art.” This art will both be a celebration of local creativity, a quirky fun celebration of Pi Day, and once sold, will benefit two great causes. An auction will also be held for the right to throw a whipped cream pie in the face of local celebrities! The target will be able to bid against everyone there to avoid taking the pie in the kisser! The show begins at 6:00 pm, and all art will be sold via silent auction ending at 9:00 pm. All proceeds will go directly to the American Cancer Society and the Live Bold fund. The entire community is invited to come out, bid on one of a kind art, and enjoy a fun and unique event. If unable to make it to the event, donations can be made directly to the American Cancer Society through the Relay For Life of Fort Wayne under the YPACS team. Sweets So Geek will also have Pi Day contests, awarding the customer who can recite Pi to the farthest decimal with a full pie and their name engraved in a trophy pie pan, to be displayed permanently at the store. There will also be music entertainment from School of Rock, a cash bar by CS3’s, live art being created, Pi(e) themed desserts, and more! Visit the Facebook event for updates! About Sweets So Geek Sweets So Geek started as a hobby for former pastry chef Chad Seewald and blossomed into a profession. Making a few Star Wars chocolates for friends and family, the hobby moved into an Etsy store, then into a commercial kitchen, and now into a full retail location specializing in custom one-of-a kind cakes, ice cream, gourmet desserts, chocolates, and more that you just can’t find anywhere else. About Young Professionals for the American Cancer Society (YPACS) YPACS is a community-based voluntary organization comprised of young adults dedicated to the American Cancer Society in its mission to eliminate cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. YPACS advances the mission of the American Cancer Society through fundraising, public relations, and promoting cancer awareness...
