Rachel Stephens – Why Did You Stay Here?

Rachel Stephens, Managing Editor, Living Fort Wayne I went to school in northeast Indiana and admittedly, I wanted to leave as soon as I was 18. My angsty teenage self had some crazy idea that to be a “proper grown-up” I needed to leave my home town. After spending my first year of college away at Ball State University, I realized I missed Fort Wayne. Most of my free weekends were spent coming back to visit. I moved back and finished school at IPFW and loved the education I received there. Attending a smaller university gave me more opportunities to make connections with others in my degree program and in the community. I became interested in the region’s economic development and took an internship with the Regional Partnership and became a member of the Emerging Leaders Alliance. I love living in northeast Indiana because I can have a voice and make a difference here. YLNI’s Living Fort Wayne Committee wants to know your answers to one or both of these questions. “Why Did You Move Here?” or “Why Did You Stay Here?” Email your one-two paragraph answer to one of these questions to Tim Zink at timz@ylni.org. There are two photo options – you may include a professional headshot with your answers (quickest) or you can set up an appointment to have your photo taken later this summer. Please include your preferred name and title. Your photo and response may be used on YLNI’s Living Fort Wayne website, Facebook, Twitter, and/or...

LFW Member Spotlight – Rachel Stephens

Have you ever wondered who the people behind Living Fort Wayne are? Or maybe you’re curious about the different things our team does every day that make Living Fort Wayne the go-to destination for all the great things happening in our city. In this new spotlight series, we’ll be featuring a few of our amazing volunteers who will share a bit about their contributions to Living Fort Wayne and what they do outside of their volunteer work with us. Today we are spotlighting Living Fort Wayne’s Managing Editor and Blogger, Rachel Stephens! What is your role with Living Fort Wayne and why did you decide to volunteer with us? I am the managing Editor and a blogger with Living Fort Wayne. I love writing and I love Northeast Indiana so volunteer for Living Fort Wayne seemed like a perfect fit. Tell us one thing about your life outside of Living Fort Wayne. I love to cook! When I am not working or writing I am surfing Pinterest and whipping up new recipes in the kitchen. If you could live any place in the world, besides Fort Wayne, where would you live and why? If I had to take up residence elsewhere, I would dream big and permanently live at the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora. While I have never been to Bora Bora, the idea of waking up in paradise next to the ocean everyday is enough to sell me. If you had a friend come in from out of town, what is the one can’t miss thing you would show them or do with them in Fort Wayne? If I had a friend come in the summertime, I would have to show them the YLNI Farmers Market on Barr Street. Strolling downtown, picking up local produce and ordering lunch from a food truck is the perfect Fort Wayne Saturday afternoon experience, What is the most interesting place you’ve been in Fort Wayne that you don’t think many people know about? Over the summer I had the chance to tour the Electric Works campus. I am sure by now everybody knows about this exciting project, but it was a cool experience to see the old GE campus and hear about its former operations and how that history will be preserved in its renovations.   If you were going to karaoke tonight, what song would you sing? “Remix to Ignition.” No doubt about it. Keep your eyes peeled for the next Spotlight with another one of Living Fort Wayne’s volunteers. If you’d like to learn more about opportunities to help out with our blog, send us an email at info@livingfortwayne.com or reach...

ReStore Your Passion with Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne invites members of the community to an exclusive sneak peak of their new retail space at the ReStore Your Passion event on February 8th from 6 to 9 p.m.   Why a New ReStore? According to Lindsay Hannah, director of development for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne, the ReStore’s is not able to reach its full potential in their current location on Wells street. “It is not a high-traffic area, it is not easily accessible, the parking is limited, donation drop-off and pick-up was not convenient for customers and the sales floor size limited our ability to properly display all the great items we’re trying to sell.” With their new location on Lima Road near Glenbrook mall, all of these issues will be resolved and Hannah said Habitat can expect to grow their annual ReStore revenue from $750,00 to $1.5 million within the first few years. “Doubling our revenue at the ReStore would cover Habitat’s annual operating costs, allowing us to commit 100 percent of donations to families in need of affordable homeownership.” Why is this so important? Habitat’s vision is, “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Right now there are more than 1,000 people in Fort Wayne on the waiting list to apply for Habitat’s affordable homeownership program. The predicted increase in revenue from the new ReStore will support their vision by providing a 300% annual increase in the number of families served through Habitat for Humanity in Fort Wayne. Now that is something to celebrate! With champagne and local cuisine, the ReStore Your Passion event will cheers to the upcoming grand opening of the new ReStore and benefit Habitat’s Women’s Build. Tickets cost $40 for single attendees, $70 for couples and $25 for groups of at least four...

This charming boutique opened this past August in the City Exchange Shops in downtown Fort Wayne. They are ready to see how much locals love to “shop small” this holiday season. Specialty products from around the world Meli Mei is proud to bring fashion from different cultures to our region by selling accessories from around the globe. Thanks to this hip boutique, you can shop styles from Paris to Bangkok here in Fort Wayne. Meet the maker Monday: Anne Cauduro is a Brazilian designer, who now resides in Paris, France. Growing up, Anne was always interested in crafting as she watched her mother create clothes and accessories. Anne later got her degree in Fashion Design, but was feeling lost. In 2016, she moved to Paris and began creating jewelry that would transmit her personality and a mix of her life in Paris and her Brazilian roots. She started working mostly with natural materials from Brazil and felt particularly in love with all the gorgeous healing stones from there. Later her partner Guilherme joined and they created @laboboa together. “Being able to create a connection with another person, to deliver a piece that we made with our own bare hands, and which will make someone happy to possess, is special. It gives us a feeling of empathy to one another, and that’s such a beautiful feeling. Empathy can change the world.” Here at Meli Mei, we are proud to work with such talented designers and always striving to bring you the best products from around the world.#shopmelimei #meethemaker #meetthemakermonday A post shared by Meli Mei (@shopmelimei) on Oct 23, 2017 at 1:11pm PDT 2.  Goodies for all ages Shopping with your little ones?
