Artlink’s Gallery Crawl: Meet Theoplis Smith

On Thursday, April 14th from 6 to 9 pm, Artlink is hosting its first Pop-Up Gallery Crawl! Participants have the opportunity to take a walking art tour through downtown Fort Wayne where they will experience local music, food, and original 2D and 3D artwork from a variety of artists. After visiting the locations by Fort Wayne’s Coney Island, the Gallery Crawl will continue to the Cinema Center on 437 E Berry Street. As one of Indiana’s oldest theaters, the Cinema Center is dedicated to offering a variety of films from across the world which the people of Northeast Indiana might otherwise not have access to. At the Cinema Center, guests will try samples of food, courtesy of Calhoun Street Soups, Salads, & Spirits (CS3), while being serenaded by the musical talents of professional singer, pianist, and composer, Alicia Pyle. This stop on the tour will also feature a vast range of artwork by Theoplis Smith.     Also known as “Phresh Laundry,” Theoplis Smith is a prominent local artist known for his paintings, murals, and live art. At the Gallery Crawl, he will feature numerous pieces which include portraits and abstracts both large and small. He will also showcase speed paintings known for their “urbanized bold colors and organized chaos.” His goal is create work that is vivid, positive, and most of all “atmosphere-capturing.”     Theoplis Smith began art when he was just a toddler. “The tender age of 3,” he explains. He was constantly inspired by art almost his entire life. “Visiting art museums, traveling, seeing cultures, and family sparked interest. Encouraging family and friends pushed me professionally at 13.”     To Theoplis Smith, Fort Wayne is the perfect environment “for the new explorer or the seasoned vet of the art world.” In Smith’s perspective, art is the very core of Fort Wayne. “It’s the heartbeat of the city. Without the experience of the arts, collectively we wouldn’t exist today. It helps to blossom the local economy and gives people an outlet while bringing the community together.” To Theoplis Smith, without art, Fort Wayne would not be the thriving, developing city that it is today.   More of Theoplis Smith work is currently on display at the contemporary art center, the Wunderkammer Company, and Bravas restaurant on Fairfield Avenue.
