LFW Reviews: Three Rivers Music Theatre’s The Last 5 Years

This past weekend, Three Rivers Music Theatre raised the curtain at the Parkview Physicians Group ArtsLab for its stage debut and production of The Last 5 Years. Living Fort Wayne’s Susan Tsai and Rachelle Reinking attended the performance and are here to give you a first look. Susan: So as I stated in my preview last Thursday, this is definitely a show you do not want to miss! My feelings I gained through a sneak peek at their rehearsal were confirmed when I attended opening night. The two characters were played by two amazingly strong actors, Billy Dawson and Jessica Butler. They pulled you into their characters so deeply, I could feel each glimmer of hope and each crack of heartbreak. The music, the lighting, and the stage, all helped bring the story of the relationship to life. For anyone attending, don’t expect to leave on a happy note from the story though. You’ll certainly be blown away by the stunning performance itself, but as for the story, you start and end in a dichotomy of happiness and sadness, each represented by one of the characters. Rachelle: To echo Susan, this production is a must-see! I hadn’t ever seen a live performance of this show, but the actors brought it to life. Dawson and Butler filled the stage with their presence, no ensemble necessary. The music, which alone is full of fantastic ballads and catchy tunes, added to the emotional spectrum the couple went through. From the first glance of love at first sight to the pain of separation (or vice versa if we’re talking about Kathy’s perspective), both actors gave powerful delivery of each part of Jamie and Kathy’s relationship. There is also plenty of comic relief throughout the show. Some scenes are a bit adult for little ones, but overall it’s great for a date night or a night out with friends. The Last 5 Years definitely is an accurate portrayal of romantic relationships that makes you feel all of the emotions. Three Rivers Music Theatre set the bar high with their inaugural premiere, and I can’t wait to see their next show. There are still four more opportunities to catch the show! Friday, April 8 at 8:00pm Saturday, April 9 at 2:00pm and 8:00pm Sunday, April 10 at 1:00pm Adult Tickets are $25, Students with ID can get tickets for $18, and Adults 60 and over can get $20 tickets. Click here to buy tickets online or call the ArtsTix Box Office at (260) 422-4226.
