Barr Street Market Vendor Series: Utopian Coffee Company

Living Fort Wayne is proud to begin its series on Barr Street Market vendors with Utopian Coffee Company, founded by Brendon Maxwell.  I had the pleasure of speaking with him and Utopian’s Master Roaster, Landon Porter about some of the things that make Utopian Coffee Company so unique. Utopian Coffee Company was founded in 2006 and boasts coffee that mimics its name…Utopian, meaning excellent, ideal, and aspiring to perfection. That sounds like a tall order, but it is something that Brendon and Landon take great pride in.  Utopian Coffee Company is mainly an online coffee store selling high end, gourmet coffee by the bag.  They guarantee freshness, ensuring that every order is delivered within four days of roasting. These guys encourage you to “skip the coffee shop and brew a great tasting cup of coffee in your own home.” They don’t just brew masterful coffee, they make it a point to give back too.  Utopian Coffee Company supports philanthropic groups locally and globally by giving back to communities that produce the raw product they use in their coffee. Some of those groups include Women for Women International, Bridges to Prosperity and Run for Congo Women. It’s easy to see how passionate Brendon and Landon are about what they do. Here is a little more I learned from my conversation: Q. How long have you been a vendor at the market and how often are you there? A. This will be our second year at the Barr Street Market.  We will be there every other week beginning May 17th. Q. What kinds of items do you sell? A. We sell fresh roasted specialty coffee by the bag.  We also feature pour-over coffee made by the cup. Q. This may be a silly question, what is pour-over coffee? A. Great question! Pour-over is a coffee brewing method that is all done manually. We place coffee grounds in a brewing cone that sits above a cup, then we carefully pour the hot water over the grounds. Coffee will then drip out of the bottom and into the cup. This method allows us to control important brewing variables like the water distribution over the coffee grounds. It’s a relatively simple method and is very rewarding! Q. What are some of your more popular blends? A. We really only have one coffee blend, our Utopian Reserve, which is a crowd favorite.  We mostly focus on single origin coffees that have such fantastic and varied flavor profiles, there is something to please everyone’s palate.  We just released a new coffee called Colombia Pitalito. It’s a direct trade coffee that is super smooth and tasty! Q. What is...
