Federation of Genealogical Societies to Hold 2018 National Conference in Fort Wayne

On the Three Rivers: Past, Present, and Future Visit Fort Wayne is proud to announce that the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) will be hosting its 2018 National Conference in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Grand Wayne Convention Center and the Allen County Public Library will be hosting this group of genealogists from around the country on August 22-25, 2018. Fort Wayne is home to the nation’s largest public genealogy collection, housed at The Genealogy Center in The Allen County Public Library. Accessibility to friendly, expert genealogists make Fort Wayne the perfect fit for this convention, as well as for visiting genealogists all year long. FGS is open to anyone with an interest in family history, from beginners to experts with many years of experience. The conference will feature many workshops, lectures, speakers, networking opportunities, and an exhibit hall that will be open to the public August 23-25 at the Grand Wayne Convention Center. Sessions are aimed at strengthening research skills no matter what one’s level or area of expertise might be. The annual economic impact of this group is estimated at $569,441. The awards honor tourism entities who are creative, innovative and maximize the dollars invested. The award for “Best Cooperative Partnership” was presented to the Visit Fort Wayne Foundation for their newly launched community calendar website: CurrentFortWayne.com. The judges noted the work as having clear goals and audience, with a well thought-out plan. “It is an honor to receive this statewide award for our efforts in bringing this community dream to fruition,” adds Kristen Guthrie, program coordinator. “We are proud to have collaborated with community organizations and hundreds of community event planners to bring this new tool to our community. Release – Weekend events to bring in over 16,000 visitors to city

Press release from Visit Fort Wayne Music, basketball, volleyball, hockey, and softball will be bringing thousands of visitors to Fort Wayne over the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The MLK Volleyball Challenge returns for a sixth year at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum and will bring in an estimated 10,000 attendees from January 13-14. Meanwhile, over the same dates, SportONE Parkview Fieldhouse will host the popular Gym Rats MLK Basketball Classic (4,900 attendees) and SportONE Parkview Icehouse will host the 2018 Crossover Hockey Games, bringing in 250 in attendance. January 12-14, The Plex South welcomes the National Softball Association’s 2018 Snowflake Frenzy, which will bring an estimated 400 in attendance. In downtown Fort Wayne, the Indiana Music Education Association Professional Development Conference (600) will convene at the Grand Wayne Convention Center for a sixth consecutive year. The conference will feature a large trade show, educational workshops and performances at the Historic Embassy Theatre. Fort Wayne’s restaurants, attractions and hotels will feel a generous bump in business as a result of these five events, as more than 16,150 people and $2.92 million dollars will enter our city over three days.
