Wine & Yoga at Sylvan Cellars

Looking for a mid-week stress reliever? Sylvan Cellars in Rome City offers Wine & Yoga every Wednesday from 6-7 p.m. all summer long. Instructor Kristi Martin provides a re-energizing yoga experience that can prepare anyone to tackle the rest of their week with confidence. After you’ve found your zen, Sylvan Cellars offers a complimentary glass of wine or beer. I recommend sipping your vino or brewski on the porch for added tranquility. After this week’s session, Martin described the vibe of Wine & Yoga as, “relaxation then afterwards fellowship. You’re in a more relaxed state, you can have wine and chill and have some conversation.” This atmosphere is open to any skill level. My friend and I attended this Wednesday and had no prior yoga experience. After learning the basics and taking in the peaceful scenery, I am certain we will be back for more! “Everybody has always been able to leave super relaxed,” Martin said, “it centers you, it’s just an overall good experience.” Classes are $17 which includes a glass of wine or craft beer of your choice afterwards. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat, but if you forget yours at home (like I did) Kristin has extras. Check out this post for more details about the class. For more information about Wine & Yoga, follow Sylvan Cellars on...

Yoga To Beat The Winter Blues

Yoga is an incredible benefit to one’s physical, mental and spiritual health. With winter weather causing most time spent to be indoors, it’s a great opportunity to give it a try! Feeling a bit intimidated by yoga? Or maybe you’ve got a mat you like to lay out in the living room, but you’re a bit nervous to go to a group session? Fear not! Fort Wayne is home to many studios that are suitable for all skill levels. For The Novice: Fusion Yoga A post shared by • FUSION YOGA • (@fusionyogafw) on Nov 23, 2017 at 9:54am PST Fusion Yoga offers an intro course that has been dubbed “Yoga for Men Who Can’t Bend.” A series constructed around teaching men the basics of posture in a supportive atmosphere. Fusion Yoga offers many styles of yoga, but their most practiced style is “hot yoga.” A variety of yoga that requires their studio be at a high temperature and humidity  to ensure that your lungs and skin do not dry out. There are also many who enjoy the heated environment simply as a way to get out of the cooler temps outdoors. Whatever your reason is for wanting to try hot yoga, Fusion is welcome to any and all! PranaYoga PranaYoga also offers a Yoga Basics course. Whether you are new to yoga, or prefer a milder routine to your sessions, this class is perfect for you. Peace of Mind Wellness Center – Entrepreneurship Spotlight

This week in Entrepreneurship Spotlight, we are highlighting Stacey Patalita, owner of Peace of Mind Wellness Center, to share her experience as an entrepreneur. Stacey is from Fort Wayne and has always been interested in helping people manage stress in a healthy and creative manner, but it wasn’t until this year that she was finally able to channel that passion and start her own business. In August of this year, she opened Peace of Mind Wellness Center on Lake Avenue, just down the street from Parkview Randalia. She and her team provide affordable stress management and wellness services, including massage therapy, yoga, life-coaching and more. Their mission is to provide affordable stress and health management services to everyone.   What made you decide to open a business in Fort Wayne/Northeast Indiana? I was already here, but also, I wanted to reach more of the average person. I don’t need to look elsewhere for that, everyone has stress. For people who want to be yogi masters, there are plenty of places that offer that. For the people who are intimidated by that, I wanted to provide something that can help them mentally and physically. People can sign up for one session/class or five. It’s what they want and are comfortable with doing. Peace of Mind Wellness is more for the average person who isn’t a pro at yoga or meditation, but wants to take care of their mind and body through stress management. We provide a safe, comfortable environment where we can help them do that.   What are some of the challenges you have encountered in starting your business? We’re doing a lot of trial and error right now with our offerings and the timing, so that’s been a challenge, but we learn as we go. Getting the word out, too, has been a challenge because we don’t have the budget for marketing. Facebook has been huge, though, a lot of people commenting and sharing their experiences. That’s been super helpful.   What person has helped you the most in your journey?  We had a meeting with Rhonda Ladig, from Start Fort Wayne at the Atrium and she was awesome. She gave us some really great ideas and potential connections, and recommended we participate in 1 million cups. We haven’t participated yet, but I’m working on it.   What resource in the community has helped you thrive in the community?  Really, the local community. Through Facebook, the people interacting with us, sharing, commenting, it’s helped us a lot. I did a few free classes at Lakeside Park before opening and the people who came really enjoyed it and reached...

Studio Seva Takes Fitness to New Heights

Think about that rush of joy as a kid, as you sprinted toward the monkey bars at recess. Remember how fun it was to climb them and hang upside down? Sometimes, we get too caught up in the day-to-day to allow ourselves the play time we need. Luckily, Fort Wayne just got its own version of an adult playground. Studio Seva now has aerial fitness classes! I spoke with Owner Joni McCarran about the studio’s new toys (okay, and played on them a bit) and how Studio Seva is taking fitness to new heights.   Located on the other side of the North Anthony Corridor Mural, Studio Seva opened in 2012 and has continued to be a welcoming, yogi community. Offering Hatha, Iyengar, and rope wall yoga, Joni took particular interest in the playfulness of aerial yoga, using silk hammocks as props in class. This year, she made the decision that she really wanted to bring more aerial options to the studio and Fort Wayne. Through her research, she found the perfect apparatuses for an adult playground: Tissu (aerial silks), Corde Lisse (smooth rope), Lyra (aerial hoop) and my personal favorite, Corde Volante (static cloud swing), which is a soft rope affixed to the ceiling at each end that hangs like a swing (whee!).   While you play, you also get a great work out! Aerial fitness is an exciting alternative to typical bootcamp classes and traditional strength training. Classes are sequenced with equal parts work and play. Conditioning exercises will build your upper body, core, leg, and grip strength and increase mobility in your hips, legs, and shoulders. This prepares you for climbs, stands, sits, and eventually, inversions! Being up high, upside down, or both can be a little intimidating at first, but all of the conditioning exercises in class safely prepare you to do all kinds of cool tricks and Instagram-worthy poses.   In discussing the new aerial classes, Joni is most proud of the fact that anybody can do them. “There’s so much variety in class, that it truly is all levels. We offer everything from the fundamentals and beginner strength training to trick combinations and aerial dance. That’s the beauty of aerial arts. You don’t have to be a Cirque du Soleil performer, just bring a good attitude and be willing to try something new. I love watching students in class over time, because you can see confidence emanating from them through their development as aerialists. We strive to have fun and work toward progress, not perfection.”   If you’re ready to try something fun and challenging, definitely check out the aerial classes at Studio Seva. You can peruse the schedule and class pricing packages here. Joni also hinted that you may be...
